Forms of Essential Lavender Oil

Essential lavender oil is commercially easily available in a variety of forms. As well as the aromatherapy oil, bath products, soaps and lotions, the lavender can be used as an infusion or an extract. However, although any age can use lavender as a skin application or as aromatherapy oil, it is not recommended that you give essential lavender oil to children in oral preparations as it is quite strong. For that reason, it should not be used on open wounds, either. Dosages for inhalation for both adults and children are 2-3 drops in 2-3 cups of boiling water. For a tea, just a couple of teaspoons per teacup are needed. The mixture should be left to brew, and drunk no more than three times per day. Forty drops of tincture, three times a day, is the maximum, too. As a skin application, essential lavender oil is one of the few essential oils suitable for undiluted application.

Be Careful & Don’t Over Do It

Herbal medicine is an ancient way of healing the body, treating illness and calming the mind. However, just because it is natural, it doesn’t mean that essential lavender oil is completely harmless. It has active ingredients which make it effective, and you can suffer allergies or side-effects as a result of its use, although these are rare. It can also have reactions when taken in conjunction with other medicines and herbs, so be careful, and discontinue use if you suffer problems. Certainly if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use essential lavender oil.
